Heaven on Earth

Truly Bukit Tinggi is an enchanting land. Known as Minangkabau, it's a land of blue mountains, hidden valleys, lakes, steps of green and yellow paddy fields, waterfalls and addictive fresh cold air. Hosting us for 5 days are the warm and friendly people of Minangkabau rich and unique in culture reflected in their architecture, language and delicious food.

#1: Paddy fields

#2: The Angel

#3: So many angels ah? The water fall at Anai valley.

#4: Rumah Adat Temenggung. There are 2 types of rumah adat. The Temenggung and the Perpatih.

#5: Inside the rumah adat

#6: Ikelah, Mdm Ikelah and Mdm Boogey

#7: Jam Gadang in the centre of Bukit Tinggi. there's a small park and pasar atas there where you can buy telekungs with all those fancy laces. We went there every morning but entered the pasar atas. Pergi jam 6 pagi dan balik malam. Pasar dah tutup.

#8: At the base of Jam Gadang I saw 3 wierd people. I have no idea what they were doing. Praying? Learning to pray? Spying? What??? They do have a kiblat though.

#9: Our friend E Im. I don't know how to spell it but his real name is Saiful Rahim. He's our driver tourist during our stay there and he also owns the hotel we stayed in and the house below is his house in the middle of a paddy field. A very rich driver. That's why he's a driver tourist.

#10: Jus Alpukat or Avocado drink is everywhere in Bukit Tinggi. Very thick, delicious and healthy.

#11: Waterfall in Anai valley. This is one of the places rarely visited by Malaysians. There are many waterfalls in Arau Valley and this is one of the many.

#12: This is one of the activities rarely done by Malaysian tourist when visiting Bukit Tinggi but we did it every moring except on our last day. I don't think any sane Malaysian tourist would wake up every morning at 5:30 and walk to Jam Gadang to join the morning bersenam which starts at 6:30am sharp every moring.

#13: One of the waterfalls at Harau Valley

#14: Another waterfall in Harau Valley. They all have names but I only remember the Air terjun Murai because as told by the keeper, burung murai suka mandi di situ.

#15: Waterfall stunts.

#16: This is the Harau Valley. The weather is not so good. It was raining now and then.

#17: Masjid Raya Bengkudu. The second oldest mosque in Indonesia after the one in Kota Gede Mataram in Yogyakarta. However in termas of originality, it's the oldest with a background of morethan 200 years and no new addition or rebuilding. Ori and authentic. The people are friendly and helpful and we performed solat Jumaat there. 2 years back we solat Jumaat at Masjid Kota Gede Mataram. How lucky.

#18: Masjid Raya Bengkudu from a high angle after the Friday prayer.

#19:This is where we stayed in Bukit Tinggi. A cheap but quite clean and very friendly hotel. The location is excellent only 5 minutes walk to Jam gadang and 10 minutes to Lobang Jepang.

#20: A view of Sg Landia from a spot up in the mountain on the way to Lake Maninjau.

#21: What's so interesting about this place? Ikelah's eyes were roaming and blood pumping with adrenalin as we were passing this spot. Kawasan keras!

#22: Realm of The Trap door spiders

#23: On top of the surrounding highgrounds encircling Lake Maninjau. Lake Maninjau was actually a volcano.

#24: View of lake Maninjau. This was shot before the area was surrounded by mist. See the reflection on the surface.

#25: Shooting trapdoor spiders of Lake Maninjau

#26: Lake Maninjau

#27: Kerbau of lake Maninjau yang berjaya memikat Ikelah. Look at the eyes. Ikelah concluded that kerbaus here have sexier eyes. Must be the high altitude syndrome.

#28: Lake Maninjau isvery clean. It's very important and there are many beautiful reminders.

#29: Rumah Hamka. Built with the funds gathered by ABIM, we received a freindly welcome there.

#30: Shy, friendly and playful girls decorated our visit to Rumah kelahiran Abuya Hamka.

#31: What's this? Another spider of Lake Maninjau.

#32: Enjoying the beauty of Lake Maninjau. Dunhill taste better here.

#33: No comment.

#34: Lake Singkarak on the way to Danau di Atas and Danau di Bawah.

#35: Danau di Atas. Ikelah adjusting his settings.

#36: By Danau di Atas. This one i had time to edit a bit.

#37: An edited image on the way to the Danau Kembar.

#38: Mdm Boogey decending from the pondok tinjau Danau Atas Danau Bawah. Behind her is a Hu Hu Hu.

Pilihanraya 8 Mac 2008

Taipusam Again And Again

I have been trying to upload these Taipusam images many times and only now I succeeded. During Taipusam, I spent some time by the river to watch the devotees preparing for the procession. I followed and observed one family of a husband, a wife, a daughter, a baby and grand pa. I took a shot and searched for the husband to respond and when he gave an OK look, I planted myself there for sometime while Pang5 took position near the shower which didn't surprise. He have always been fond of watching people taking showers. He was not alone though. Scores of other ace and amateur photographers also have the same obsession. Having a camera in your hands give you certain benefits. You feel strong as if holding an assault rifle, you feel neutral because you don't see throughj the naked eye but through a glass, you can do all the silly circus thing lying on the ground or climb a pole and people admire your agility and style and you can watch people taking a shower and escape the electric shock treatment or maybe now they just give pills for such disorder.

So the husband mixes several things and lit a fire. i couldn't help myself asking what did he use as the fuel because the flame looks very soft.

#1: The shower.

#2: Lighting the flame

#3: The soft flame. Kaki tu macam terangkat yek? Hebat Grand Pa nih!

#4: Husband and grand Pa

#5: Daughter gets blessing

#6: Girld get to carry milk offering

#7: Baby gets blessings

#8: You tell me

#9: Tell me again

#10: Placing the baby to carry

#11: Joining the procession

#12: Climbing the steps.

#13:Entering the cave

#14: Scene inside the cave

#15: This is P5's restaurant. Inherited punya. It's near the HICOM advertisement. I found this restaurant while searching for P5. See..the coincidence?

Sepupu saya Kahwin.

#1: Mrs Wazerin tengah tunggu Mr Wazerin pakai samping.

#2: Mr & Mrs Wazerin bersanding. Dah akad nikah hari sebelumnya.

#3: Pengantin berdua ni nampak ceria semacam.

#4: Posing jeling-jeling ni Ikelah yang suka sangat. Aku shoot jek ikut dan.

#5: Main close up sikit ala ala shoot spider dan dragon fly tapi tambah buat soft spot pakai picasa.

#6: Ni tumpang Mak Andamnya posing. Mak Andam ni jugak lah yang all rounder jadi jurufoto sekali.

Akhirnya mintak tunjuk ajar sifu-sifu wedding photographer berikan komen sikit supaya lain kali boleh buat lebih cun.

Ikelah punya shots, entah bila la dia nak post.

Ada videoman off position depan tu ambil close up sedangkan patut ambil dari angle aku.

Rasanya nak kena beli Gary Foongnya bounce lah. Nampak pak sedara aku pakai, skin tonenya menarik.

#4: The Last Action Hero.

#5: Jurufoto Router in Action. Red tengah ralik menembak ombak dengan berlindung balik batu besor. Kira kalau Jepun nak mendarat di TC ni, kalau tengopk Red dah gini, tak jadi gamoknya.

#6: The last of The Action Hero. kecundang jugok di bedal ombak.

Edit pakai Picasa jek.

Gambor semelih tak de.

CLEAN as BERSIH

It's a late entry for last Saturday BERSIH rally or more like a gathering near Dataran Merdeka. I arrived in front of KWSP at about 2:15 pm just as the Police opened up tear gas fire into the crowd. It was the first time for me to shoot events like this and in fact I wouldn't have been there if not for Red calling me every day and night bugging me to go.

The crowd appeared very peaceful to me and from the yellow T shirt some folks wore, the gathering was for the Government to improve the polling system in Malaysia. To make it more transparent and just. It carry 4 message : 1. Permanent dye to mark those who have casted their votes. 2. Recheck the voters data. 3. Open up the election for the media to monitor. 4. Abolishment of Undi Post.

The message sounds good enough for me. As a rakyat I would like to see that happen as well although I'm not wearing any yellow T shirt or support any political wing. Like Red, I'm also just too twisted no political party would want me to join them. I'm more like an opposition to anything and everything and I can even end up opposing my own argument. I guess the reason some people doesn't want to improve the election system is because they are complacent with the current practise which grants them some advantage. Well, why change for the better when the better doesn't suits your best interest. The better doesn't make you become better. When improvement doesn't help improves your vote count, then it's not improvement. The rakyat too doesn't want improvement because they vote 'Yes' to these people and thus 'NO' to improvement. Is that what the majority says? I believe the majority can't be bothered with such things. They are too busy counting money to pay their mortgages and will readily vote anyone who can delete their piling debt.

Red narrated the event and I'll just post some images he probably missed. Thumbs up to the peaceful yellow. Down for the Blues. Sorry Blues but you do look powerful but by acting like that you just made the Yellow look like heroes.

Some images are blurry because it was raining and I was also holding the umbrella with one hand to protect my camera. Hehehehe. Not professional at all and that's exactly why because I'm an amateur who got this camera and lens with my own bloody sweat. Not like those photojournalist who walk around with their camera dripping wet and can lay them down on the road some more. Any way, I lost some Kg walking from Wisma Sime Darby to Merdeka Square to Istana Negara and then back to Wisma Sime Darby. My left thigh was throbbing and i was dragging my legs when I reach home. Got nagged some more for the mud and dirt I brought home but it was all worth it. The best moment during the event was when we call Ikelah to tell him the progress of the event and hear him listen in excitement and snorting in frustration at the same time.

#1: The first tear gas attack. You can see nobody is carrying any banners. They only wear yellow T shirts and not even all of them.

#2 : The tear gas spreading.

#3 : Then the Blues closed in and made several arrests. Probably to scare off the rest.

#4 : The road in front of Dataran Merdeka was closed for a long time. even after everyone got home.

The lessson I learn that day? Wisdom is more powerful, believe only half what the news say, don't follow the news photograpers who mostly just wait at dataran merdeka and Istana Negara and get some waterproof jacket like Red.

Selamat Berpuasa

I just got back to KL after spending the week end in my hometown Kuantan. Brought the family to the beach by Taman Gelora to pass time before berbuka, went to Tanjung Api for some kuehs.

My father invited the relatives to the berbuka dinner but no photos was taken eventhough there were also Red and Ikelah. Probably sebab lapar sangat, lupa semua kamera.

It also coincided with a photo talk lesson organised by FMDC Kuantan in UIA Kuantan. Quite a number of KL FMDC members joined including myself. I didn't participate actively in the photo class but did attend although at the end session. I attended the 10 pm TT at Jelita. The service there was quite fast but the boss/owner should attend some customer service training or at least a short course on smiling. And thanks to dR Ali, the next day we had a great time shooting baby turtles at the Cherating turtle sanctuary.

#1: Taman Gelora is just 5 minutes walk from my parents house. 25 - 30 years ago we the children of that era called it Taman Tasik. Even the people of Kuantan mostly have no knowledgeof it's existance. It was my sanctuary and hide out then. It only became known when ITM opened a brance there which was later taken over by IKIP. With time many things changed. It got cleaner now but crowded as well.
I brought my family there last week end to see what's on. Me and 2 kids walked in front and the rest were crawling behind. Soo, after some time the crawlers got left behind and we waited for a while for them to catch up.

#2: The others finally arrived.

#3: A thick rope dangling from a branch can attract a kids very easily. You don't have to teach them what to do with it. They teach you.

#4: Children loves to immitate creatures. Mostly T Rex but for now it's monkey.

#5: I'm the fairest and the feminine of them girls. I got style got class osso. Piiiirah.

#6:Manja Abah. I don't walk yet but I can climb.

#7:Tanjung Api. This used to be the poverty area of Kuantan. Old collapsing houses on rotting stilts have made way to much better much bigger concrete houses. Good to know my neighbours in Tanjung Api daily complaints now is only about lack of income to pay this and that. Before it was about NO rice for the next meal. I used to take a bot penambang from here to Tanjung Lumpur. In those days, there were no bridge to Tg Lumpur.

#8:Now they have money. Only it's not enough. That's my complaints too. Actually it can be enough if we shorten the list of necessary things.

#9: Buai Laju Laju while waiting for the Turtles.

#10: And Buai Ramai Ramai. With Maman, Ikelah's youngest son.

#11: First Hello Shot of a Baby Turtle in the hands of my son Emir.

#12 : Another shot.

#13: Turtles are seriously an endangered species in Malaysia. As the slogan says: "If the buying stops, the killings will too". Their life is already so much upside down. So let's not buy turtle eggs and help discourage others from buying as well. Let's just shoot them instead. With cameras.

#14: The shooters in action. FMDC team. Thanks and congratulations to the Pahang FMDC for the arrangement and to Perikanan Pahang for making it happen.
Hopefully our photos will create more awareness.

#15: I got so much help so much attention but my journey is still long. As you are, I'm created for a beautiful purpose. Stay by me and protect me...as you wish God will stay by you and protect you.

#16: From Mom, I'll learn to protect and care for others.

#17:From Dad, learn how to shoot images and auta Mom.
