Dragonflies of Malaysia - A Brief Introduction
|
|
Scientific Classification :
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Suborder: Epiprocta
Infraorder: Anisoptera / Zygoptera
Dragonflies are common in Malaysia and can be found all around the globe in every continent except in Antartica. We have known them as very fast flyers, can be very colourful, harmless, timid and love water. We see them dipping their tail into water, skimming on the surface, resting on twigs and darting here and there and they are very difficult to capture. True they are harmless to humans but to other insects, they are probably the most fearsome flying predator with the most advance aviation system for aerial combat. If size doesn't matter, a dragonfly can down the latest US jet fighter YF22 Raptor in seconds.
Let's see what they have :
Speed : Can reach 60km per hour.
Range : Detected to cover a total distance of 137km per day.
Agility : Can instantly change direction while at high speed. Humans can't take that much G force.
Vision : Compound eyes of about 26,000 lenses with individual sensors capable of 360 deg vision. Can focus up to 20 feet. Focusing speed more than twice of humans.
Audio : Dragonflies are deaf. Therefore you do not need to whisper when you are near them.
Camouflage : Now this is the most interesting thing about them. I have always thought the colours and patterns on dragonflies are for camouflage but it's not.
Dragonflies employ a kind of optical illusion called motion camouflage to trick their prey.
They can move in a certain pattern where the prey will see them as stationary, at a different location or very far but in fact they are actually already closing down fast on the prey.
There are 2 general types (Infra Order) of dragonflies :
1. The Zygoptera which is more commonly called Damselflies. When at rest their wings are folded back like most other flying insects. previously I didn't know damselflies are dragonflies as well.
2. The Anisoptera which is commonly known as the True Dragonflies. They are larger and when resting, their wings are opened to the sides.
All dragonflies have 2 pair of wings. And when in flight the two different pair move inverse way meaning from the front, we'll see they'll form an 'X'. That's where the Star Wars probably came up with the X wing fighter.
Where can we find them?
Dragonflies spend most of their life in larvae form in a pond, lake or stream. Different species may prefer different type of habitat. Some prefer shady spots, some sunny, some still water, some flowing, some prefer clear water, some prefer muddy. They live only for a few weeks or months as an adult dragonfly compared to a few months or a few years as larvae. The larvae are predators too feeding on mosquito larvae, other insects, tadpoles and even small fish. As larvae or more specifically called nymph, they instead fall prey to larger fish and bigger nymphs. As adults dragonflies fall prey to fish, reptiles and amphibians usually during mating and laying eggs when they are most vulnerable. Some may get entangled in a spider web and become prey but unlike other insects, due to their speed and agility, they are not an easy catch for birds.
What does adult dragonflies feed on?
A dragonfly can eat up to 600 mosquitoes a day. They also eat other small insects like moth, butterflies, flies and sometimes each other when food are scarce. Dragonflies are not venomous and they kill and eat by ripping and tearing apart their prey usually head first. From their hunting habits we can separate dragonflies into Hawkers and Darters. Hawkers are often seen continuously flying in circles. They scan the area, attack, eat in flight and re attack. Darters can be seen resting on a twig or leaf and darts out every now and then to attack a prey flying by and then return to the twig.
Within the Anisoptera infra order, there are 5 families.
With this entry, I'll show four images from the Libellulidae family. The Libellulidae family is also often called the common skimmers and dragonflies from this family generally have a relatively thicker abdomen than those from other families. The first one is the red darter or Neurothemis ramburii which was shot in Rimba Ampang. It can be seen not only in Malaysia but also in Thailand, Phillippine down to Java. Notice the transparent hyalin layer at the wing tip and the layer at the hind wings curves sharply. That's the distinctive characteristic actually because there are quite a number of red dragonflies around.
The second image is a blue darter called Acisome panorpoides. Distinguisable from the square like blue pattern and black stripes on the abdomen. This one prefer disturbed habitats, ponds near housing ptrojects, paddy fields, swamps and drains.
The third is again a clearer image of the blue darter Acisoma panorpoides.
The fourth image is of the pink darter Crocothemis servilia in it's habitat by a pond in Rimba Ambang. Below it In the back ground are 2 red darters N. ramburii.
The fifth image is of a lily pond in Taman Gelora, Kuantan where I spotted another pink darter Crocothemis servilia.
#1: N. Ramburii ( Red Darter)
#2 : Acisoma panorpoides ( Blue Darter )
#3 : Acisoma panorpoides. ( Blue Darter )
#4 : Crocothemis servilia. ( Pink Darter )
#5 : A Lily Pond. Favorite habitat for some of the most colourful dragonflies.
#6 : A closer image of the pink darter.

Macro Safari in Kuantan
|
|
With Red and P5, we joined Ikelah on a macro safari to a spot about 250m from his house in Beserah, Kuantan. Red were hunting for spiders particularly the fishing spiders which hunts small fish and I were studying the possibilities of specializing in dragonflies.
To specialize in a particular subject needs a lot of reading, time and a more systematic approach which I worry will wear me off earlier than I should. But I'll give it a try anyway. Choosing dragonflies as my main subject is not going to be easy as there are about 230 known species in Peninsular Malaysia alone and it's very difficult to determine the differences even between the families what more the species. Different families and species are mainly identified anatomically from the shape of the larvae, the shape and size of the eyes, the colour and pattern on the body, the shape, colour and pattern on the wings, the shape of the prostigma and the shape of the abdoment especially the end segment S10 or to be precise the anus. To establish a proper labeling for identification usually samples of the larvae and adult are collected for close examination.
But for me, I'll just try to identify and label them from the photographers perspective for the benefit of other dragonfly shooters so that they can know which dragonfly they shoot.
Below are some images from the Kuantan Safari in Taman Bukit Pelindung, Beseran and taman Gelora Kuantan.
Red The Spiderman and P5 in the background.
Ikelah, Red and P5 inspecting a possible fishing spider which later to Red's dissapointment is identified as a pirate spider. Ikelah couldn't kneel down much lower due to his age.
The pirate spider. Spiders are masters of ambush and being a pirate, this one can ambush a fellow spider.
We stumbled upon a couple making out in a bush. Red, Ikelah and P5 was fast in collecting visual evidence. Since there were already 4 of us there dan ada pulak imej jelas, boleh la sabitkan tuduhan pada tahap maksima.
Red wanted to look dramatic. Layan je la. Jangan tersembam dalam paya tu dah le. See the paradise in the background?
I noticed a tiny cricket on a rotting log. Looks interesting. Wouldn't it be better if I widened up the DOF a bit more?
Give some comments and give suggestions on how my dragonfly presentation should be like? What approach should I use? How can I get a SP90 the easy way?

Revisited: Macro Life in Bukit Belacan
|
|
Last Sunday me and Red revisited Bukit Belacan for more macro shots. red was looking for spiders and me looking for anything I can shoot. This time Ikelah who was in KL for his MRI check joined us in the outing with his Nikon AIS micro 55mm 1:2. We revisited our spider friends and found some new subjects as well.
We got to know some great birdwatchers as well with their super bazookas and came across some friendly joggers who greeted us good morning. It was a great morning indeed and we also came across some interesting sights of conscious citizens picking up rubbish others left. It seems that some of the visitors to public parks are ignorant in the importance of preserving the beauty and cleanliness of the area. They came with food stuffs and left the containers all over for others to clear. I hope with better education the future generation will understand the importance of the role they can play in preserving nature, a gift from God for us to appreciate and protect.
#1: This is the Spider Tanduk climbing a tree to build a new web. Don't ask me what happened to the old web.
#2: The making of Spiderman 4. He'll probably be known a Horny Spiderman.
#3: This is a grasshopper I think. Looks like one but not a very common one. I like the pattern on it's back.
#4: This is a rather large caterpillar. I wonder what will it look like when it becomes a butterfly?
#5: I have no idea what this is. Looks like a bug but I think it's a pretty ripe coccoon.
#6: I love the perspective. This is a shot by Maman using my camera. It looks like he's trying to see what the belalang sees. None of the images are edited in any way. Not because I did not want to but I can't.
#7: This is Ikelah shooting a silver Argiope. You can see the beautifully woven web at the end of the barrel.
#8: I'm not the only one who's wierd. Some people are worse. It's just a straight road and they can still get confused.
#9: On the way back we crossed the stream. There's Red at the front followed by ikelah and later Maman and last is Daniel.
#10: What were they doing? Cleaning the area or cabut kemuncup? Whatever it was, last Sunday was the best day to do it. It was a beautiful day.
#11: It's Dragon meet Spider. This was shot by a small pond at the end of the road. Obviously a breeding pond for the dragonfly. probably I'll choose dragonfly as my macro subject in the near future. They have an interesting life cycle. They spend a larvae life under water for 2-3 years and moved to the surface for a short period of only 2-3 weeks as dragonfly which is for the sole purpose of mating.
You can notice a small spider there on the right. Red can probably fill some light on what spider that is.

Sukaneka Di Taman Maluri
|
|
Anak sulong dan anak no dua.
Tengah ralik siapkan mewarna tapi tak menang jugak.
Hok baju kuning tu anak no 2. Taking her sweet time as always.

2. Saya senang berpeluh. Masa makan berpeluh, kalau berjalan berpeluh, masa muda dulu bila berdepan dengan perempuan, saya dah macam baru redah hujan lebat.
3. Saya hanya ada 2 seluar kerja, 2 seluar kasual, 3 baju kerja, 1 pasang kasut kerja, 1 pasang kasut sukan dan 1 pasang selipar. Saya hanya akan beli baru kalau salah satu sudang koyak teruk sehingga tak boleh digunakan lagi. Itupun kalau sudah dibebel lebih daripada 1 kali.
Saya pulak tag siapa ye? Takut dorang dah memang kena tag jek.
1. Pang5
2. Za
3. Mr Ghazali
4. DITH
5. TBA

Bukit Belacan - The Photo Outing
|
|
This is just a quick update to load some images from last saturday's photo outing at Bukit Belacan. Bukit Belacan is just at the end of Jalan Ampang very near to the city centre but I was surprised it was far from crowded on weekends. I guess not many people know what's there but it's definitely a great place for people like me and bird watchers. Crowded parks tend to be dirty with litter, noisy and disturbed. This park is quite, undisturbed and rather clean. So you guys and girls if you all decide to go to the park after this, please please please preserve it as it is.
You can view great spider shots and Red's informative comments about them here :
http://tramontina.fotopages.com/
I'll just display a bit of this and that.
Belalang ni warna hijau.
Sesat ke Bro. jalan straight je la. Mana ada simpangnya.
Aksi Bollywood Nih.
Break Kejap Ambik udara segar. Sambil duduk ambik gambar.
Dah penat duduk, bongkok sikit, ambik gambar lagi. Yang ni aku edit sampai hancus.
Ni Spider Tanduk Idaman red.
Spider tanduk tengah makan.
Decoy Orb Weaver. Amenda ke tu tanya Red.
Ni Hijau Punya Spider.
Ni hok Argiope tu. Dia rapatkan kai biar nampak macam ada 4 kaki je.
Ni Xtreme macro photographer. Look at that not only hand held but also tree held. He desperately needs a ladder to avoid the backlights.
Thanks Bro Hakam for inviting us there. He got some great shots of baby spiders which me and Red failed to capture. Damn must get that Sp90 ASAP.

Pulau Carey - Part 2
|
|
These are a few more images from my trip to Pulau Carey. The Mah Meri orang asli, the original owners of the island and their wood carvings.
This little girl is part of the welcome commitee and also member of the dance group.
The anchor musician. Without him there'll be no music and so no dance.
The Welcome dance. The boy wearing the wood mask is supposed to be some kind of spirit.
The Mah Meri make their living my selling woodcrafts. This one is big and will take months to finish. Some works at the Golden Hope Plantation.
This is an example of the most popular character of their woodcraft. The Harimau Berantai. They did tell us why this character is their favorite but I wasn't listening.
One of the craftsman busy finishing one huge "Harimau Berantai". I already placed a tissue paper in front of the flash tapi alahai.
This coming weekend I'm going to Serting Hilir pulak for a Homestay Programme. Insyallah I'll return with some interesting images. This time, I have an external flash to play with but since I'm new to it, don't place a high expectation on the results.
I have this one but I don't like the background.

Pulau Carey?
|
|
Sorry I did not update this fotoblog for quite sometime. I've been quite occupied with several things. I do come in but only spend time to check on others blog and leave some comments.
When I got this invitation from Tourism Malaysia to introduce Pu;au Carey as a touristic destination, my middle finger secara spontannya mencapai kelapa untuk menggaru.
After asking around I found out it's just ebside Pulau Indah near Kelang. I've never been to Pulau Indah but have seen the name many times on the highway boards. I even used to ask what's there in Pulau Indah.
Anyway, most of the island is owned by Golden Hope Plantation, a small part by Selangor state and a smaller part is reserved for the orang asli. I'll put more input on what these are from time to time but I'll post some images first. Maybe images can explain better than words. Some of the images appear senget. Forgot to adjust.
Pulau Carey got it's name from the orang puteh yang diberikan pulau ini oleh Sultan Selangor pada zaman tu. Some many years ago when they taught me the lagu patriotik anak kecil main api, i thought it was about something in the vey past like this. Well it still exist today and unfortunately practised by those who taught me the song as well. There are a few colonial buildings in Pulau Carey which were once the residential house of the orang putehs.
The Hatters Palace. From the orang puteh who used to own it. Now the colonial houses there are guest houses for visiting Golden Hope Plantation top hats. I'm going to work this in B&W.
A demonstration by the estate worker on how they work.
I saw this old jongkang jongkit in front of Hatters Palace and just took a closer shot. This woul be another good one for B&W.
This is a barn owl or the Tyto Alba. There are many of them in the Golden Hope estate living in posh high rise towers courtesy of the corporation. Well nobody give things for absolutely free nowadays. The owls return the favor by keeping the rats and other rodents at bay.
That's an orang asli rumah sanggar. That's what I heard the tok batin say. It's a place for them to give offerings to their ancestors. The cat is not one of them.

Ikelah's surgery
|
|
It was 3 days ago that I received a phone call of the bad news. My sister back home in Kuantan called and told me that Ikelah was just diagnosed of a brain tumor. At first I thought it was just a joke but it took me only a few milliseconds to realised that nobody would joke about such things except well probably P5. I was shocked and just a few minutes later I received a phone call from Red and later P5 to confirm the thing.
Ikelah arrived in KL the next day to be admitted in Tawakkal Hospital in the evening and all of us went to meet him. Uncles, aunties, nieces, cousins and his friends were there. I was touched to see so many cared. The doctor who attends to Ikelah is Dr Sola his secondary school friend who is the ENT specialist in Tawakkal and he is going to operate him together with a neuro surgeon in Damansara Specialist Hospital on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. It's now 7:00 pm and I just heard that the surgery went well and he is now recovering in the ICU. Pray he will recover fast and up again shooting great photos with us.
#1 You can see the tumor there. The bright round shape in the centre of the image where the pituitary should be. That's why Ikelah have vision problem and couldn't take great photos lately.
#2 The Subject and the MIR: Red made Ikelah hold the MIR film so that he can shoot.
#3 Red and Maman playing the card game called Magic the gathering. I never can understand the game but they look so into it. Maman is Ikelah's youngest son.
#4 Red and Maman continues the game from the hospital ward to the Haslam restaurant while waiting for dinner.
#5 Sambung lagi main game tu lepas dinner di lounge hospital. Tak peduli dah apa menda di sekeliling.
#6 The visitor : Relatives and friends came. The one with crutches and have some sort of skiing boot on the right leg is P5. he's not the patient. He's like that for the OKU parking space.
Semoga Ikelah cepat sembuh dan sembuh sepenuhnya insyallah.

Taipusam - The long walk and 272 steps.
|
|
So, what is Taipusam all about? After watching the ceremony through my camera lens, today I read a bit about what I shot. If only I had read earlier, then i would have a clearer goal during the shoot out. That will be next year perhaps.
The story as read in journey malaysia website which I just copied to here.
A long, long time ago- the world was torn apart by an infernal war between the Devas (celestial beings) and the Asuras (evil forces). Tired of constant attacks from the Asuras, the Devas paid homage to Lord Shiva and asked for his protection. Moved by their plight, Lord Shiva agreed to help the hapless Devas.
Lord Shiva opened the central eye on his forehead, radiating six sparks of fire. At the convergence of these sparks and through a series of celestial transformation, Lord Murugan appeared. He brought forward this powerful divine personality with elements of Himself and yet distinct from Him, powerful and brave enough to defeat the tyrannous Soorapadme - the meanest and most powerful of the Asuras. Armed with a Nyanya Vel (golden spear) presented to him by Lord Shiva, Lord Murugan went into battle with the evil force. A fierce battle ensued. Finally with one fatal stroke, Lord Murugan slayed Soorapadme. The divine converted one portion of the slain enemy into a peacock as his vehicle and the other portion into a cock adorning his banner.
Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva is considered the very manifestation of valour, beauty, youthfulness, vitality, masculinity, valour and the abode of happiness. Thaipusam celebrates the very essence of Lord Murugan and the power of good over evil.
That`s what the background of the festival. Now what do the devotees do on during the festival? They pay their nazar.
There are a number of reasons as to why devotees would take a kavathi. Some seek to overcome bad karma, some as penance for their sins, and others to honour a vow. Those fulfilling a vow have, in the past asked for help such as birth of a baby, healing the sickness of a loved one, helping them pull through hard times and sometimes to help them through their studies. In return they have proposed to carry the kavathi if the request is fulfilled. There are, of course those who participate only to reaffirm their strength of faith.
Each participant had to physically, mentally and spiritually prepare himself through a 48day fast - eating only one meal a day (strictly vegetarian), conduct prayers at home and at the temple, observe abstinence from carnal pleasures, observing 'mounam'(silence) as far as possible and even endure personal hardships such as sleeping on bare floor. However many do not observe such long periods of purification and the more experienced pilgrims may fast for only seven days or so.
So now we know what it`s all about and next year we know what sort of images should be considered as the BIG 7. This year, if I shot any BIG 7, it`s just accidental.
Which of the images below do you consider best in depicting the Taipusam festival?
BIG 1: The Flaming Nyior Komeng
Shot this one at ISO 1600 without flash.
Shot this one while leaving the cav to meet Red. I think that`s his wife asking for blessing at his feet. Must have been a big wish for a big kavadhi.
Climbing the 272 steps to the cave mouth where they`ll take out the hooks and whatever and also the cause of the trance.
Even in trance, the young ones do it in style. The attitude doesn`t change easily.
All hell break loose. This is one of the first images I shot and the one Red is asking for. She was in deep trance, doesn`t look so preety and doesn`t sound very calming also. She was like whailing and whistling in a wierd tone. Ikelah and his wushu kids would have left the area and sty out of the 10km radius.
This one was more outstanding. The sound was more weird.
I`m not so sure what`s the red all over him. I assume it to be blood. So much blood then. No wonder DITH set a blood donation counter there some years back.
We can see many type of behaviour. Must depend on the type of spirit possesing them. Some whirling, some walks in grace, some stomping their feet, some walks arrogantly and some keeps staring back. A lurker perhaps?
What might be her wish. She look exhausted.
This one is possessed by a noble spirit. Many came for his blessings.
This is my personal favorite. An old man in his own private world.
Must be Hanuman.
I don`t know about this one. I just saw him being carried like that and just took a shot.
They made a very fast entrance into the cave. Walked dancelike very fast and I couldn`t get a steady shot but still decided to post them here just so perhaps people might find it interesting under the theme motion. Hehehehe.
Fire in the cave. I haven`t read the significance of this act. Anybody can tell me?
More reason for DITH to open blood donation counter.
Chick of the Festival. How come there`s a chicked loose in the cave? Is there a reason? I know the contrast is bad. I didn`t use any flash and the light is low.
The guy giving a lot of blessing I understood is possesed by the spirit Lord Murugan. He gave a posture symbolizing someone holding a lance.
We saw this guy before in my previous entry. The one with big spike.
Lord Murugan again giving his blessings. He`s quite popular. Inside the cave I watched his escorts taking off the spikes and hooks and later put something into his mouth and then placed a palm onto his head to cast out the spirit he`s hosting. He got off the trance in a dramatic yell and dropped to the floor jerking and rolling and almost caught fire. They have to pull him away from a nearby flame. Later I saw him being interviewed by a reporter.
This auntie is getting her spike off her cheeks. She got off the trance easily. No yelling or rolling.
The preety girl doesn`t look possessed in any way to me but her friend is definitely possessed. Now who in the right mind would have korek hidung like that sampai nak ke lengan in the middle of a large crowd full of photographers? Must be possessed to be that obsessed.
This last image is a view of the cave interior. No tripod is used so a bit shaky. Just to give an idea how it`s like.
